The
area of the Xpuhil pre-Hispanic site that is open to the public and
in the custody of INAH is only an architectural group known as group one
which is constituted by some of the many buildings that are part of the
archaeological zone. In
fact, to date has been reported about 25 architectural groups on a
total area of land comprises an area of about 24 km². When the present population of Xpuhil, head of the municipality of
Calakmul, in the same place that many groups of the old pre-Columbian
Maya community is located, it is evident the affectation of numerous
mounds in the surface of place.
The
pre-Columbian Maya settled in Xpuhil at the beginning of our era,
forming, in the beginning, a small village whose existence was in
function to the aguada that conditioned there. The
use of natural resources and the construction of large works of
agricultural infrastructure, when population growth and the development
of a prosperous community, especially between 600 and 800 AD Also, its
strategic location in the peninsular geography, between the coast Of
the Caribbean and the lagoon of terms, allowed Xpuhil Y to other Rio
Bec centers, international among themselves and with other populations
of neighboring areas, in the commercial and cultural spheres.
